Ingredients
Mini Donuts
- Baked Mini Cake Donuts – 5 per treat
Candy Coatings
- Orange Candy Melts® Candy – 12 oz
- Black Candy Melts® Candy – 10 oz
Decorations
- Candy Eyeballs – 0.88 oz
- Green Spice Drops – as needed for stems
Instructions
- Make mini doughnuts. Prepare the mini cake donut batter according to your favorite recipe or package instructions. Bake the batter in a mini donut pan and cool completely. You will need five mini donuts for each treat.
- Ice bottom with candy. Melt the orange Candy Melts according to package directions. Use a spatula to spread the melted orange candy on the bottom side of each donut. Use a toothpick to clear the center hole if needed. Place the donuts, candy side up, on a parchment-covered board and chill them in the refrigerator until the candy is firm, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Cover donuts with candy. Place the donuts bottom side down on a cooling rack set over parchment paper. Use the remaining melted orange Candy Melts poured into a cut decorating bag to cover the tops and sides of the donuts completely. Tap gently to smooth the coating and remove any excess candy. Chill again until firm, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Decorate donuts. Remelt orange Candy Melts as needed and pipe section lines onto the donuts to mimic pumpkin ridges. Chill for 3 to 5 minutes to set. Melt black Candy Melts and pipe a smiling face onto the donuts. Chill again for another 3 to 5 minutes. To create the stem, trim the top third off a green spice drop, shape it into a stem with your fingers, and attach it along with candy eyeballs to the donut’s hole using melted orange candy as glue. Chill until firm, about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Assemble donuts. Use melted orange Candy Melts in a decorating bag to stack and attach five donuts on top of each other on a parchment-covered board. Chill until the entire stack is firm, about 3 to 5 minutes. Your Mini Donut Halloween Treat is now ready to serve!
Notes
- You can use store-bought mini cake donuts if short on time.
- Be sure to chill the candy melts properly after each step to ensure a smooth and firm coating.
- If spice drops are unavailable, green fondant or candy canes trimmed and shaped can substitute for the stem.
- Handle the decorated donuts gently as the candy coating can be delicate.
- For best results, use fresh candy melts and avoid overheating to prevent graininess.
