Description

Grilled Hot Honey BBQ Smoked Sausage Skewers are a delicious and easy summer meal. Juicy smoked turkey sausage, colorful bell peppers, and red onions are skewered and grilled to perfection, then glazed with a spicy-sweet hot honey BBQ sauce. Served over rice and garnished with fresh cilantro, this dish is perfect for backyard barbecues or quick weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 13 ounces smoked turkey sausage
  • 3 bell peppers, chopped into pieces
  • 1 red onion, chopped into pieces
  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey
  • Chopped fresh cilantro, for serving
  • Rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill: Start by preheating your grill to high heat. This ensures that the skewers will cook quickly and evenly, developing a nice char on the outside while keeping the inside juicy.
  2. Prepare the sausage: Cut the smoked turkey sausage into 1-inch pieces. This size matches well with the chopped peppers and onions, creating balanced skewers.
  3. Assemble the skewers: Thread the sausage pieces, bell peppers, and onions onto skewers in any pattern you prefer. Aim for 4 to 5 pieces of sausage per skewer, alternating with the vegetables.
  4. Make the glaze: In a small bowl, stir together the BBQ sauce and hot honey until well combined. This creates a sweet and spicy glaze that will caramelize beautifully on the grill.
  5. Brush and grill: Brush the assembled skewers generously with the hot honey BBQ glaze. Place the skewers on the preheated grill and cook for 10 to 12 minutes total, rotating every 2 to 3 minutes to ensure even cooking and caramelization.
  6. Serve: Once grilled, brush the skewers with additional glaze if desired. Sprinkle fresh chopped cilantro over the top and serve the skewers over a bed of cooked rice.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, marinate the sausage and vegetables in a mixture of olive oil, garlic, and herbs for 30 minutes before skewering.
  • If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before use to prevent burning.
  • This recipe can be easily adapted for the oven. Broil the skewers for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until charred and cooked through.
