Description

A family-friendly indulgence, Garbage Bread is a savory delight combining crispy bacon, seasoned ground beef, melted Velveeta cheese, and a golden-brown crust. Rolled up like a stromboli, this dish is easy to prepare and perfect for satisfying cravings. Serve it with a tangy mayo-ketchup sauce for dipping. It’s a sure hit for dinner, game nights, or even as a hearty appetizer!

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Bread:

  • 1/2 pound chopped bacon
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning (e.g., McCormick)
  • 12 ounces Velveeta, cubed
  • 1 (13.8 ounce) thin crust pizza dough (e.g., Pillsbury)
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar jack cheese

For the Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside to prevent sticking and ease cleaning.
  2. Cook the Bacon
In a large skillet over medium-low heat, cook the bacon until crispy. Once done, remove the bacon from the skillet and set it aside. Drain most of the grease but leave a thin layer in the skillet.
  3. Prepare the Meat Filling
Turn the heat to medium-high and add the chopped onions and ground beef to the skillet. Cook until the onions soften and the meat is browned. Drain the excess grease from the pan and return it to the stovetop over low heat. Stir the cooked bacon into the meat mixture and season with steak seasoning. Add the Velveeta cubes, stirring continuously until the cheese is completely melted. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  4. Assemble the Garbage Bread
Roll out the pizza dough on the prepared baking sheet into a rectangle roughly 15×10 inches. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border along the edges to prevent overflow. Sprinkle the grated cheddar jack cheese over the meat mixture.
  5. Roll and Bake
Roll up the pizza dough tightly, starting along the long side, like a jelly roll. Pinch the edges and seam to seal the dough. Place the rolled dough seam-side down on the baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow the bread to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
  6. Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, salt, and pepper. Serve as a dipping sauce for the sliced Garbage Bread.

Notes

  • Substitute Velveeta with any melty cheese like mozzarella or Monterey Jack if desired.
  • Add diced pickles to the sauce for a tangy kick.
  • You can use store-bought or homemade pizza dough.
  • This recipe is versatile—add sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or peppers to the filling for extra flavor.
  • For reheating, use the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes to maintain the crust’s crispiness.
